Artist Sandro Botticelli

"Sandro Botticelli was born around 1444-45. He is one of the greatest names of Renaissance art and probably the best loved painter of the quattrocento.Born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepe, his nickname, meaning “little barrel”, had originally been given to an older brother, probably on account of his stature, but eventually was adopted as the family surname.Botticelli trained with Filippo Lippi and spent almost his entire life in Florence, with the exception of a trip to Rome in 1481-82 when he worked on the decoration of the Sistine Chapel. The very fact of his inclusion in this prestigious project emphasises the considerable reputation he must already have acquired in his native city.Botticelli’s most famous paintings include Primavera, The Birth of Venus and Pallas and the Centaur all hang in Florence’s Ufizzi Gallery and were probably commissioned by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de Medici, a cousin of Lorenzo the Magnificent.Botticelli’s studio was busy and successful, and his output was fairly considerable. As well as his religious and mythological paintings, he also produced memorable portraits. However, his work declined in popularity after the return to Florence of Leonardo da Vinci in 1500 and Botticelli only really recovered his fame towards the end of the 19th century, when his paintings were rediscovered by the artistic elite of the time.Botticelli died in 1510."
