Artist William Vanscoy

William Vanscoy was born in San Mateo, California in 1946. He gained a degree in photography and then worked as a professional commercial photographer in Los Angeles for over 20 years. He was originally inspired by a number of photographers including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Paul Strand and W. Eugene Smith. After changing to Large Format View Cameras he embraced man made and natural landscape attempting to emulate artists like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. While working in Los Angeles as a commercial photographer William stayed connected to his own fine art taking time to photograph in the American Southwest and Europe. In 2002 he made his final commercial image and moved to the Southern Coast of Oregon.

He says on his website: “My goal is to create a serene self-expressive image that reflects the wonder and peace found in my experiences in life. I believe it’s not what’s seen but what’s expressed that makes photographic art”.

Williams’s photographs are made using digital capture and extensive digital post-production sometimes combining multiple photographs to create one realistic image.
