Artist Russell

"Ingrid Russell was born in California in 1971 and describes her creative influence as being the result of her introduction to art “through the magical illustrations of Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen and Ernest Shepard. I love so many artists, from El Greco to Chagall, Cezanne and Vermeer. I admire Matisse for his bold simplicity and confidence and the refinement of John Singer Sargent”. “I am interested in simple universal themes that everyone can relate to”, she states, and “the irrepressible energy of nature.” This love for the awesome power of the open expanses of sky and water, as well as the surreal starkness of the desert or the lushness of tropical climes, is visible in all her works. Her paintings are alive with the vivid colours of natural settings and luminous with the light of the Mediterranean. Ingrid Russell works in silence, in at atmosphere almost like meditation. She believes that any true inspiration comes spontaneously in this way. Her education has been a lifelong pursuit the most profound lesson was one she learnt from her college drawing professor, who had escaped the Communist regime by stowing away on a boat. She taught the artist “the value of diversity. Without that there is no beauty.” Away from the easel, Ingrid Russell’s pursuits and interests include reading, hiking and Latin dancing."
